Enforce judgment in Tanyigbe chieftaincy dispute – Anyidoto family to security councils

Six months after the Judicial Committee of the Volta Region House of Chiefs (VRHC) ruled that Togbe Etoi-Kodzo II is the legitimate Paramount Chief of Tanyigbe, the royal Anyidoto family has called on the house to take the appropriate steps to enforce the judgment.

They said the blatant disregard for the judgment by the rival Adiko family, which they said were engaging in unlawful acts, was inimical to the peace of Tanyigbe.

“These acts by the Adiko family also amount to contempt for the Judicial Committee of the VRHC,” said the Adanufia of Tanyigbe, Togbe Adanu I, at a press conference at Tanyigbe on Sunday (September 14).

For instance, he said, after the judgment on March 21, 2025, the Adiko family on April 18 and 19 held a ceremony to re-install Roland Adiko as the paramount chief of Tanyigbe.

Meanwhile, the Adanufia said Mr Adiko had gone ahead to install a new Sohefia of Tanyigbe, although Tanyigbe already had a Sohefia.

The judicial committee of the VRHC, in its judgment, declared the enstoolment of Roland Adiko, as null and void, and set aside his nomination, election, selection and enstoolment as paramount chief of Tanyigbe Traditional Area.

“Roland Adiko, ought not to have been enstooled after the death of Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, since by the scheme of the rotatory system, he does not hail from the ‘appropriate’ clan/lineage to be paramount chief after the late Paramount Chief, Togbe Kwasi Adiko V,” the committee held.

Based on the ruling, the Anyidoto family have, therefore, called on Roland Adiko to refrain from holding himself out as the Paramount Chief of Tanyigbe.

“Any act suggesting otherwise such as continued reference to him as chief, and allowing him to lead, participate or play any role in his alleged capacity as the Paramount Chief of the good people of Tanyigbe amounts to willful disobedience of the orders of a competent judicial committee and could well constitute contempt of the committee,” said the Adanu chief.

Togbe Adanu said Tanyigbe’s development in the areas of roads, schools, water systems, community centres and other infrastructural projects had stalled as a result of chieftaincy disputes.

He called on the Ho Municipal and Volta Regional security councils to ensure the judgment by the Judicial Committee of the VRHC was complied with by all and sundry at Tanyigbe.

The judicial committee, made up of the chairman, Togbi Gbordzor III, Togbe Adrakpanya III, and Togbega Sei II arrived at the decision to recognise Togbe Etoi-Kodzo II as the properly enstooled paramount chief of Tanyigbe, after looking into a petition by two natives of Tanyigbe, Gabriel Akoto, and Cephas Akoto, brought before it in February 2019.
