Tema-Mpakadan moving train crushes man to death
A middle-aged man was crushed to death by the Tema-Mpakadan moving train in the Bediako enclave, close to Afienya in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday evening.
A video footage captured by the train’s camera shows the man, whose identity was yet to be confirmed, was walking on the rail tracks as the train approached.
Despite frantic attempts by the train operator to sound the horn, the victim continued to be on the track and was hit before the train came to a stop.
The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has expressed regret over the tragic incident.
Police personnel from the Community 25 Division responded and conveyed the body to the Tema General Hospital for examination and formal identification.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the train operator repeatedly sounded the horn after spotting the man on the tracks, but the victim failed to move to safety before being struck.
The Ghana Railway Development Authority has cautioned the public against walking along or crossing railway tracks, stressing that such actions pose serious risks to life. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety along all railway corridors and pledged continued collaboration with law enforcement and emergency services to prevent similar tragedies.
The GRDA added that management has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The latest occurrence adds to growing concerns about pedestrian safety along the railway network, as authorities intensify public education on the dangers of encroaching on train routes.
Earlier on Monday, a moving train was hit by a stone allegedly thrown at it, and smashing a window with perpetrators fleeing the scene before security could intervene.
