GAF Chief of Defence Staff Calls for Return to “Strict Regimentation” to Combat Modern Security Threats
Ghana's Defence Chief maintains that a renewed focus on discipline is essential for a stronger military.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has issued a firm call to restore traditional military discipline and strict regimentation within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as a foundational step toward national security. Speaking at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 on Monday, March 23, the Chief of Defence Staff identified these core values as the essential “backbone” required to navigate an increasingly volatile global and regional security landscape.
Addressing officers at Burma Camp, the Chief of Defence Staff emphasized that operational efficiency is deeply rooted in adherence to established standards and unwavering respect for the chain of command. Lieutenant General Agyapong argued that while the nature of warfare is changing, the military must remain firmly grounded in the discipline that defines a professional fighting force.
“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined and forward-looking to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” the Chief of Defence Staff stated.
The Chief of Defence Staff warned that Ghana faces a complex array of modern challenges that go beyond traditional combat, specifically highlighting hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and organized transnational crime. To counter these, the Chief of Defence Staff stressed that the military must be both adaptable and highly disciplined.
The four-day retreat, running from March 23 to 26, is being held in phases across Burma Camp in Accra and Mampong-Akuapem. The event aims to reposition the Armed Forces through a renewed focus on regimentation, unity, and resilience as outlined by the Chief of Defence Staff.
Beyond internal discipline, Admiral Seth Amoama highlighted the critical importance of “jointness,” calling for stronger coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Chief of Defence Staff noted that joint planning is essential for successful modern operations and urged for closer cooperation between the military and other state institutions to ensure an integrated national security framework. Finally, the Chief of Defence Staff encouraged officers to embrace innovation and new technologies to remain effective against future challenges.
