Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu is taking President Akufo-Addo on for his statement made at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Ghana Bar Association Conference on Monday, September 11.

President Akufo-Addo, during the said event, insisted that his government has waged the strongest of fights against corruption since Ghana attained independence.

According to him, his government has taken some bold initiatives aimed at fighting the canker.

“I accept to speak here in order to take advantage to once again place my government’s record on corruption for public scrutiny.

“It will show that my government has taken arguably the boldest decision since Ghana attained independence nearly 66 years ago to reform and strengthen institutions to tackle corruption in the public sector.”

However, President Akufo-Addo added that it is not his job to convict or clear anyone accused of corruption.

“Charity, they say begins at home and that is why so far any allegations leveled against any of my appointees have been investigated by independent bodies such as CHRAJ, the CID, and in some cases by parliament itself.

“It is not my job to clear or convict any person accused of wrongdoing or engaging in acts of corruption. That is the job of the courts and the law enforcement agencies.”

But reacting to this claim on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, September 12, Mr Kpebu said President Akufo-Addo is not being truthful.

Martin Kpebu insisted that President Akufo-Addo has personally been accused of corruption and will be prosecuted when he leaves office.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo will not be allowed to avoid accountability.

“Let’s come to the president’s own involvement in corruption, the reason why last year I said he was part of a criminal syndicate. Don’t forget Manasseh Awuni did a documentary in which the president personally asked for fumigation of schools, etc. by Zoomlion at a cost of over ¢500 million and he is yet to bring his response.”

“That is what the Manasseh investigation found about him personally. All the assemblies all the way to the ministries all said it was the president and even the assemblies showed that they could have done it at a cheaper cost yet President Akufo-Addo personally supervised that fumigation at over ¢500 million and he thinks we have forgotten?

“He should wait until he leaves office, we will drag him. We will ask for him to be prosecuted. He shouldn’t forget. He will be prosecuted in this country,” he told host, Kojo Yankson.
