Former President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly elected executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cut their celebrations short and start work towards victory in 2024 immediately.

“The first thing I will say is that this celebration must be very short,” he told them after giving them a congratulatory handshake on the podium.

“We must cut the celebration short and set to work immediately.”

According to Mr Mahama, who has led the NDC in the last three presidential elections as its candidate, the upcoming polls will be “the most critical elections with the highest stakes”.

“And this executive is going to oversee that election.”

Long-time friend of Mr Mahama, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, emerged triumphant as the National Chairman of the party, beating incumbent Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

Among the three Vice Chairpersons elected was the Minister of Fisheries during Mr Mahama’s tenure, Dr Sherry Ayittey.

His Minister of Agriculture, Franklin Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, was also elected the new General Secretary.

Mr Mahama said the delegates, whom he believes “have the best wisdom”, have spoken by way of the pattern of votes.

He insisted it behoves on the rank and file of the party to “listen” to the delegates.

“Some people say ‘Fear Delegates’ but I believe that the delegates have the best wisdom and they have spoken and told us what they want and it is our duty to work with the blueprint that they have given us.

“These gentlemen and women here have been elected by the delegates to serve a mandate till 2026.”he last hurdle of the NDC, the country’s largest opposition party, is to elect its flagbearer to compete the reorganisation process after the slim defeat to the New Patriotic Party in 2020.
