John Cena Signs New Five-Year WWE Contract, New Role Revealed (WWE News)
5 more years of John Cena in WWE, but...not as an active member of the roster
WWE legend John Cena has inked a brand new 5-year contract with the market leader, but claims he won’t be actively wrestling following his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on 13 December. The babyface will bow out after his match with Gunther on that show, but has told Tom Rinaldi on WWE’s YouTube channel that he’ll be working as an ambassador from here on out.
Of course, John will be juggling commitments in Hollywood as well.
During the interview, Cena revealed that he said this to Triple H and other members of management: “Please, as long as you can do it. I would like to be in this family as an employee, as a contributing part for as long as I can”. Hunter and company were only too happy to oblige.
JC said he “very rarely speak[s] in absolutes”, but he can this time because he knows he won’t be wrestling again after mid-December. Cena made his mind up on retirement and refuses to budge on it. Fans will always be doubtful about that, if only because other legends like Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin have said similar then returned to the ring anyway.
Pro wrestlers rarely stick to their guns on retirement, but Cena plans to. Besides, there’s something else behind the scenes that he’s interested in doing anyway.
Cena Wants His ‘Rapping On The Bus’ Moment
Famously, it was Stephanie McMahon who heard John rapping on a tour bus one day to keep himself and the roster entertained. Steph believed that Cena’s talents should be presented on television, so he was repackaged as a bad boy rapper in late-2002 on episodes of SmackDown. The rest, as they say, is history.
That creative shift proved to be massive for Cena, but it happened by chance. Had McMahon not overheard him, then he might have been released from the roster instead – that’s certainly what John himself thought was waiting in store for him before being recast on TV.
Now, he’d like to experience his own moments like that. John is also keen to let as many people as possible know why they should watch WWE and wrestling in general. If he can pair that ‘shouting from the rooftops’ mentality with a talent scouting head, then he’ll consider his ambassadorial role a success.
Someone backstage is about to start rapping in front of Cena, aren’t they?
