The Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has signed two contracts to tackle the perennial flood situation in Accra.
The exercise is with the support of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) and the World Bank.
Accra, a bustling capital city, has long faced a persistent and growing threat from floods. This threat has been exacerbated by increasingly erratic rainfall patterns, rapid urbanization, poor sanitation, and encroachment on waterways.
The GARID project was launched to address these challenges by improving flood risk and solid waste management in the Odaw River Basin of the Greater Accra Region and enhancing access to basic infrastructure and services in the targeted communities within the basin.
In a post on his X platform on Monday, July 29, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said “This morning, we took another significant step towards addressing the perennial flooding issues in Accra by signing two contracts for flood control works in Kaneshie.
“I charged the contractors to complete their mobilization and move to the location within the next 4 weeks, as prescribed by the terms of the contract.
“It is our hope at the Ministry of Works and Housing that this project, upon completion, will bring much-needed relief to the residents of Kaneshie.
“Thanks to the GARID Project and our World Bank partners.”
