Former France defender Raphael Varane has completed a move to newly-promoted Serie A side Como, where he joins former Premier League star Cesc Fabregas, who is now the club’s manager.
The 31-year-old Varane was a free agent after his contract with Manchester United ended this summer. He has signed a two-year deal with Como, marking a move to Italy’s top flight.
After leaving Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, Varane joined Manchester United in 2021.
Varane, who retired from international football last year after earning 93 caps for France, is excited about his new chapter under Fabregas, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder recently appointed as Como’s head coach.
“I will meet Cesc again, but this time not as an opponent,” Varane said. “I am very happy, I really like his playing philosophy and his passion for football.”
Como, returning to Serie A after a 21-year absence, will rely on Varane’s experience as they aim to secure their top-flight status. Varane’s time at Manchester United was marred by injuries, but he is hopeful of a strong comeback with Como.
The club’s Serie A campaign begins with a challenging fixture against Juventus on August 19, setting the stage for Varane’s debut in Italy’s top division.
