Spanish Embassy mocks Morrissey for cancelling Valencia show after Las Fallas keeps him awake: “We have had our first casualty”
The Spanish Embassy in the United Kingdom has poked fun at Morrissey after he cancelled a show in Valencia due to “sleep deprivation”.
Morrissey had been due to perform at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia on March 12th, but cancelled after he was unable to celebrate due to the loud noise caused by Las Fallas celebrations.
Las Fallas is an annual week-long celebration of festivities that sees locals set off fireworks among other activities.
While the festival officially begins on March 15th and ends on March 19th, Valencia has been in party mood, as it is every year, for many days already, which makes the chances of getting a solid eight hours of sleep in the city centre extremely slim, as Morrissey discovered.
Prior to the cancellation, his team warned that the show may not go ahead, posting on Morrissey Central, “Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valencia late on Wednesday.
Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing / megaphone announcements.”
It added, “This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state.
Before leaving for tonight’s scheduled concert, please check that the show remains possible under these circumstances.”
Then, hours later, it was confirmed that the concert was cancelled.
The post reads, “Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation.
Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.
The show is not cancelled.
Circumstances render the show impossible.”
In a third post, Morrissey then said that his hotel is in the Plaza Manises area and personally described it as an “indescribable hell”, before adding, “It will take me one year to recover.
And that is an understatement.”
Following the cancellation, the Spanish Embassy in the United Kingdom took to X to share lively footage of the Las Fallas celebrations featuring loud fireworks, along with the caption, “The Fallas festival in Valencia has already begun, and we have had our first casualty.
Morrissey has cancelled his show because he couldn’t sleep.”
Referencing one of The Smiths’ biggest songs, the post added, “Fallas is noise, fireworks… and there is a light that never goes out!
Enjoy today’s mascletá!”
Despite Morrissey stating that it “will take me one year to recover”, he still remains listed to perform in Zaragoza on March 14th and Sevilla on March 16th.
Notably, the axed Valencia concert is the sixth show of 2026 that he has cancelled, after pulling the plug on dates in St Petersburg, Rancho Mirage, San Diego, St Louis, and Atlanta during his North American run in January.
