Ghana Education jobs: GTEC mandates qualification checks

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed that all prospective applicants seeking employment within agencies under the Ministry of Education must have their tertiary qualifications evaluated and verified as part of the recruitment process.

The directive, contained in a letter signed by the Deputy Director-General, Augustine Ocloo, follows clearance granted by the Ministry of Finance for education sector agencies to recruit teachers and other auxiliary staff.

Crackdown on fraudulent qualifications

GTEC, which was established under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), is mandated to accredit tertiary institutions and programmes, as well as verify the authenticity of certificates, diplomas, degrees and other academic credentials.

In the letter dated April 9, the Commission attributed the new directive to the growing prevalence of fraudulent certificates and qualifications obtained from unaccredited or unrecognised institutions.

“The Commission requests that all prospective applicants to agencies under the Ministry of Education submit their academic credentials, particularly tertiary-level qualifications (Diplomas, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and PhDs) to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission for evaluation and verification as part of the recruitment process,” the statement read.

Directive to apply across agencies

The Commission urged that the directive be treated with urgency, signalling a tightening of recruitment standards across the education sector.

The requirement applies to a range of key institutions, including the National Teaching Council (NTC), National Service Secretariat (NSS), Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the Complementary Education Agency (CEA), among others.

Strengthening integrity in recruitment

The move is expected to enhance transparency and credibility in public sector hiring, particularly within the education space, where concerns about forged academic credentials have persisted.

Officials believe the measure will help ensure that only qualified and duly certified individuals are recruited into critical roles within the sector.
