The Vivat Turkson Foundation, a registered non-governmental organization based in cape Coast on 15th of June 2026, cut the sod for the construction of pediatric oncology center at the Cape Coast teaching hospital to fight childhood cancers.

According to report, about four hundred thousand cases of childhood cancers affects children globally annually with high income countries attaining about 80% survival rate as compared to low-income countries attaining about 20% survival rate.

The situation in Ghana is no different from other part of the African country’s where parents had to travel long distant to seek medical care for their children suffering from various types of cancers due to unavailability of specialized medical doctors and some families also facing financial challenges.

Being a mother who lost her seven-year-old daughter to Wilms’ tumo, most common type of kidney cancer in children, lawyer Jane Williams Turkson who is the founder and CEO of Vivat Turkson foundation noting the stress parent go through started a campaign to create awareness of the condition and other forms of childhood cancers and also to support other parents and children currently going through treatment.

According to her, she noted that in our part of the world, people are not comfortable discussing personal or family health issues, especially ones that lead to the death of a relative which she believes is killing innocent loved ones.

In her bid to honor her seven-year-old daughter Vivat Turkson who lost her life through cancer and also to help parents whom go through what she experienced during their year-long treatment at the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Lawyer Jane Williams Turkson through support from Cape Coast Teaching hospital is set to build a Pediatric Oncology Unit in Cape Coast.

The board of directors at the Cape Coast teaching hospital has officially handed over a land for the construction of the unity which will serve people from the Central region, Western region, Westen North Region, Bono and Ahafo regions and other parts of the Country.

The project which is expected to be completed with one and half year is to solve the problem of patient from the Central region to travel to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to seek treatment which drains care takers during the process.

During the official sod cutting and handing over of the land for the construction, the CEO of Cape Coast teaching hospital Dr. Eric Ngyado expressed optimistic that, the project will provide specialized care for children with cancer bringing hope and comfort for families and Patience.

The unit is designed to have comfortable wards which will host two patients per ward, reception, other offices, daycare center play grounds among others.

Speaking to kaslte News and The Hawk Newspaper reporter Kwamena Essuman in Cape Coast, Dr. Jane Williams Turkson expressed her joy for dream come through to see the construction of the unit and noted that, this will bring a sort of relief to families who are battling with childhood cancers.
