CAFWCL 2023: Ghana champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies begin campaign against Morocco’s AS FAR

After months of being hopeful, Ampem Darkoa Ladies finally have an opportunity to play in the CAF Women's Champions League this year.

After months of being hopeful, Ampem Darkoa Ladies finally have an opportunity to play in the CAF Women’s Champions League this year.

It was all joy for the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League champions after emerging winners at the WAFU B Champions League qualifiers on a second attempt having failed last year.

But they know that being at the main competition is an even greater task than the zonal qualifiers in Nigeria and their group opponents make it no easy.

But on a lighter note, the Ghanaian side already has some cool cash to rely on even without kicking a ball in Ivory Coast just yet.

Away from goodies, the real test begins for Ampem Darkoa on Monday, November 6, in San Pedro.

The first game of Group B and the biggest test yet for the Techiman-based side – a clash against the defending champions of the competition.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies will engage AS FAR Club looking to get their first taste of the continental club competition.

Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side is hoping to enjoy a bright start to life in the competition against one of the ever-present teams since its introduction in 2021.

Unfazed by the challenge, the gaffer is optimistic about his team’s chances in the competition ahead of their opening game.

“We came here purposely for the cup. Our preparation is going on very well so we are ready for the tournament,” he said at his presser ahead of Monday’s game.

“We have two teams who have national team players so it is going to be a tough game. We are going to work towards that and see how we are going to approach the game in our training. In Sha Allah, definitely, we are going to win the match.”

Ampem Darkoa will be hoping the likes of Tracey Twum and Mary Amponsah come to the party against AS FAR as they did in the WAFU B qualifiers.

The game is scheduled for a 17:00 GMT kickoff.

The 2023 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League started on Sunday, November 5, with four goals scored so far.

2021 champions Mamelodi Sundowns picked up the first win of the competition after beating Tanzania’s JKT Queens 2-0.
