The payment comprises GH¢3.64 billion for SSNIT and GH¢809.71 million for Second-Tier pension obligations, covering January to September this year.
The payments are expected to help safeguard workers’ pensions and demonstrate the government’s commitment to responsible public financial management and the fulfilment of its obligations.
The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced this in a statement issued in Accra last Friday.
“The government has paid over GH¢4.40 billion to SSNIT and for Second-Tier Pension obligations.
This helps protect workers’ pensions and shows our commitment to managing public money responsibly and meeting our obligations,” the statement quoted Dr Forson as saying.
The announcement follows an earlier disclosure by the minister that the government had released GH¢24.8 billion to statutory funds since January 2026.
The payments were made on time and in full to support education, health care, road infrastructure and local development.
Dr Forson said the timely release of the funds ensured that the institutions had the resources needed to deliver essential services to Ghanaians.
“Unlike in the past, when payments were marked by delays, capping and arrears, we now release these funds on time and in full,” he said.
The SSNIT manages the country’s compulsory first-tier pension scheme, which provides retirement income and other social security benefits to eligible workers or their dependents.
The second-tier pension scheme is an occupational pension scheme designed to provide workers with additional retirement benefits alongside the basic national social security scheme.
The timely payment of the government’s pension obligations helps ensure that workers’ contributions and pension entitlements are protected and that pension funds can meet their long-term commitments.
Meeting these obligations also strengthens confidence in Ghana’s pension system and supports workers’ financial security in retirement.
