On May 15, 2025, the Minerals Commission deployed 25 Blue Water Guards in Prestea and Aboso within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, to combat illegal mining activities and protect the country’s water bodies. Trained by the Ghana Navy, these guards will patrol riverbanks and report any illegal activities threatening water bodies, collaborating with security agencies and district assemblies to prevent environmental degradation.
During a community sensitization program, Mr. Steven Agbo, Social Scientist at the Minerals Commission, emphasized that the Blue Water Guards are a specialized team commissioned to protect the environment.
On his part, Mr. Francis Annobil Jnr, Western Regional Manager of the Minerals Commission, appealed for stakeholder support, stressing cooperation’s importance in conserving natural resources for future generations.
Hon. Matthew Ayeh, Municipal Chief Executive, advised the Police Service to ensure the guards focus on their core mandate. Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, Member of Parliament, pledged support for the initiative, commending the government and Minerals Commission for providing employment and environmental protection.
The Minerals Commission team addressed concerns from small-scale miners and traditional leaders regarding registration and licensing, assuring them of resolving operational challenges. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, poised to significantly impact the fight against illegal mining.
