The Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare has asked women, particularly young girls, to take advantage of government’s policies on education to enable them climb up the career ladder.
“It is time for the younger generations to rise up, taking advantage of the favourable government education policies and other government programs to enhance themselves for higher-level jobs.”
She also encouraged young women to take Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education seriously.
She said eliminating gender disparity in education in subjects like STEM will enhance the capabilities of women and also help them compete favourably, locally and internationally.
“Gender equality in education, particularly in higher education in STEM subjects in higher schools, should be encouraged.”
Speaking at the 2022 International Women’s Day conference held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Great Hall, on the theme: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” Frema Osei-Opare mentioned that bias towards women should be done away with.
She went on to tout the government’s intervention in the educational sector.
She said several interventions, such as the Free Senior High School policy, have been rolled out by the government to boost access to education by all students, particularly girls.
“According to UNESCO’s 2020 gender report on Ghana, more girls have been enrolled into senior high schools through the government’s free SHS initiative. This has helped to bring closer gender equality in education.”
Breaking the bias towards women in all aspects of society is what this year’s International Women’s Day is advocating for.
