Why are Bayern Munich not wearing red against Bayer Leverkusen? Full ban explained

Bayern Munich will not be donning their traditional red when they face Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The German titans are back in European action for an all-Bundesliga showdown against Xabi Alonso’s squad in the last 16, after narrowly defeating Scottish champions Celtic in the play-off round.

Oddly enough, throughout the tournament, Harry Kane and his team have been required to wear their away kits when playing at the Allianz Arena, and Wednesday night will be no exception. UEFA has prohibited the Bavarians from wearing their red home shirts in Europe’s top club competition this season.

The governing body of European football has taken issue with the dark numbers on the red jersey, arguing that they do not provide sufficient contrast for spectators either in the stands or watching on television, which is believed to breach visibility regulations.
