Four Ghanaian boxers are still in contention for slots at the African Boxing event for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after the elimination of eight.

Monday’s round of action saw veteran amateur boxer, Wahid Omar ousted in a split decision defeat to his Nigerian counterpart, Joshua Dolapo.

Female boxer, Anatu Mohammed also lost to her South African opponent, Phiwonkuble in the featherweight division.

There were wins for Joseph Commey, Jonathan Tetteh, and Theophilus Allotey who joined Ornella Sathoud in the quarter-finals of the qualifying event.

The remaining boxers must go all the way to win their divisions to book a place at next year’s Olympics.

“These are boxers that we have the trust in them that they can deliver,” the team’s media officer, Joojo Ephson told JoySports.

“We believe that the remaining will go as far as the medal pursuit and then qualify for the Paris 2024. We still have hopes here that Team Ghana will make it and have at least four or three of them qualifying.”

The quarter-final and semi-final events are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday respectively, with the finals fixed for Friday.
