No Queenmother candidate should be chosen from the late Ga Mannye’s family until further notice – Ga Traditional Council

The Ga Traditional Council has directed that no candidate for the position of a Ga Queen mother can be chosen for enstoolment from the family of the late Ga Mannye, Naa Deidei Omaedru III until further notice.

The Ga Traditional Council has directed that no candidate for the position of a Ga Queen mother can be chosen for enstoolment from the family of the late Ga Mannye, Naa Deidei Omaedru III until further notice.

This directive follows the conduct of the late Queenmother’s family – The Ga Mannye Weku – in the run-up to the Mannye’s funeral celebration.

The Ga Mannye’s family had secured an interim injunction against the Central Planning Committee and the Ga Traditional Council to prevent them from carrying out the late Queenmother’s funeral.

The family had alleged that they had been excluded from the planning of the funeral and that the Ga Traditional Council and the Central Planning Committee had hijacked the funeral.

The court’s decision was later set aside.

Meanwhile, the Ga Traditional Council and Central Planning Committee have both denied the allegations stating that they had included the late Queenmother’s family in the planning of the funeral only for them to withdraw, challenging the authority of both the Traditional Council and the Planning Committee.

According to the Ga Traditional Council, the disrespectful and offensive conduct of the Ga Mannye Weku cannot be countenanced.

They have thus, among other things, halted any process for the selection of a new Ga Mannye from the Ga Mannye Weku until further notice.

In a statement regarding the directive, the Ga Traditional Council said, “Since a Queen mother under the customs, traditions, and practices of the Ga people only advises and compliments a chief, it is absolutely essential that the family of a candidate collaborates with the chief whom she will compliment.

“To this end this end, the Ga Traditional Council has directed that no candidate for the position of a Ga Queen mother can be chosen for enstoolment without their knowledge and consent.”

According to the Ga Traditional Council, should there be any attempt to flout this directive, it will be met with dire consequences.
